join me on an exciting bikepacking journey in the Netherlands, where we explore the hidden gem of the Huttentrektoch Komoot original route. Discover beautiful gravel paths, winding forest cycle lanes, and cozy log cabins nestled in picturesque locations. Learn how to plan your own adventure.
Though I completed only 160km of the 385km trail, it was an incredible journey, providing the opportunity to meet new people, discover hidden areas, and connect with nature. This lesser-known gem in the Netherlands offers a unique bikepacking experience.
Starting Point: Arnhem Train Station and Beyond
Our bikepacking adventure commenced at Arnhem Train Station, located in the eastern part of the Netherlands. However, the beauty of this route lies in its flexibility, allowing you to start from any of the multiple train stations along the way. This provides convenience and accessibility, enabling you to tailor your adventure to your preferences.
Day 1: Traversing Beautiful Gravel Paths and Winding Forest Cycle Lanes
We cycled through the scenic Dutch countryside as we follow the Huttentrektoch route. The trail leads us through picturesque gravel paths, allowing us to explore hidden areas that are off the typical tourist routes. These paths add an extra element of adventure, providing an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty surrounding us.
Winding forest cycle lanes offer a tranquil escape from the noise of everyday life. As we pedal along these lanes, we are embraced by lush green forests, offering a serene and peaceful experience.
Our bikepacking journey wouldn't be complete without indulging in local treats along the way. We stopped for a midday snack break at a charming bakery to refuel with delicious pastries and savoury sandwiches.
Everyone knows that cycling and coffee go hand in hand. We had a coffee break later in the day to enjoy a cup of coffee amidst nature, a highlight of our trip. Equipped with camping cooking gear, we took the time to prepare our own coffee.
Cozy Log Cabins: A Unique Accommodation Experience
At the end of an exhilarating day, we arrive at a camping place offering cozy log cabins for rent. These rustic accommodations, similar to those found on mountain tops, provide a unique stay. Some cabins can be booked through trekkershutten.nl or the Nivon website. These log cabins offer simple kitchens and nearby sanitary facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay if you are travelling with a minimal bikepacking set-up. I only brought my sleeping bag and a pillow and slept very comfortably in the cabin that I share with 3 other girls.
Day 2: Relaxation and Immersion in Nature
To fully appreciate the beauty of the surroundings and take a break from cycling, we dedicate the second day to relax and enjoy nature. The cycle paths and lanes, while occasionally narrow, offer breathtaking views and a sense of tranquility. Opting for a weekday trip allows us to avoid the crowds that often occupy these paths on weekends, ensuring a more peaceful and immersive experience.
Planning Your Own Adventure:
You can use the Do-It-Yourself route in this Collection to create your own layout. Customize the trip according to your desired pace and endurance level. To book log cabins along the route, trekkershutten.nl and the Nivon website provide a range of options, allowing you to experience the feeling of a mountain hut in the Netherlands.
